How to Fix Bike Crank Arm Thread – RECOIL® – Quality Thread Insert Systems

04.11.2021

If your bike pedal is over tightened, this can sometimes cause the threads in the crank to strip or fail. 1 option is to obviously replace the crank, however another option, which is most suitable for an aluminum crank, is to use the  RECOIL® Thread Repair Kit, specifically designed for your bike crank.

RECOIL® have 2 separate kits, suitable for the left and right handed threads that bicycle pedal threads come in:

RC3409820BCL – RECOIL™ THREAD KIT 9/16-20 BIKE CRANK LEFT

RC3409820BCR – RECOIL™ THREAD KIT 9/16-20 BIKE CRANK RIGHT

How to repair:

  • Place the tap into the tap handle that comes with the kit. It is recommended not to use your own adjustable tap wrench.
  • Use RC11111 RECOIL™ RE-GRIP Fluid to assist with lubricating, and rotate the tap accordingly.
  • Apply a fair amount of pressure, as it will take some effort to remove the old thread, but continue to use the RE-GRIP fluid. Allow the tap to go completely through, however do not reverse the tap back up the thread. Clean the chips away from the threads
  • Install your new insert onto the end of the pedal. Apply a thread locker onto the insert to ensure it’s security.
  • Rotate the end of the pedal and insert into the crank, making sure no insert shows on the outer side. Tighten the pedal axel and allow the thread locker to set and dry.
  • Once the thread locker is set, remove the pedal and ensure the threading is lined up correctly in the crank.
